Is there a difference between marketing and advertising?

Where can I find the definitions of marketing vs advertising? Is there a website, forum or blog that explains the difference between marketing and advertising? Do marketing and advertising go hand in hand?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

Most of time People mix up marketing and Advertisement as same thing but they have clear difference. Let’s see the definitions of both

Marketing:
Marketing is basically planning, Implementation and controlling different business activities in order to bring the buyers and sellers together for an exchange or transfer of product or services that is beneficial for both of them.

Advertising:
Advertising is actually a paid, public, non-personal deliverance of a persuasive message by an identified sponsor or we can say advertisement is a non-personal presentation or promotion of a product or services by a firm to its existing and potential customers.

By the definitions we can clearly make difference between advertising and marketing. Another simple way of differentiating advertising and marketing is to think of marketing as a wall, inside that wall you have bricks of advertising, communication, sales strategy, and market research. So advertisement equals only one brick of wall which helps rest of the wall to stand.

Yes, there is a difference between marketing and advertising - and I'd be happy to explain the difference as I have a Masters degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. Marketing involves the 4 P's - which you may have heard of before. The four p's of marketing are product, place, pricing, and promotion. Marketing takes into account all of these things - what products do you offer and where will you offer them - online or at a store or a farmer's market, for example. Marketing also takes pricing into account - how will you price your product. Will you make it a luxury items that costs a lot of money, or will you try to compete based on pricing and offer the lowest profitable price you can. Finally, promotion is how you will promote your product, and this is where advertising comes in. Advertising is promotion such as commercials and advertisements that you pay for.

Other methods of promotion can be press releases - which are usually free. You can also promote via email and word of mouth, which is basically people spreading the word about your great product. You can use marketing materials such as brochures or flyers as well. So, as you can see, advertising and marketing are related. However, advertising is just one small part of everything that is included when you discuss marketing.

Marketing and advertising are two different concepts. Actually, advertising is one part of your overall marketing plan. It’s like in baseball. A pitcher is part of your baseball team. He is not the entire team. You also have bats, a dugout, the concession stand. See how they are all PART of the program?
Advertising is like this. It is the part of the marketing plan in which you purchase space or time in a specific setting to reach a specific target audience. But you also have promotions. You send out a coupon to “buy one widget, get one widget free.” That is not advertising, per se. Your company will do things to improve its image in the community. That is public relations, such as, donating $1000 to a scholarship fund which you know your target audience will recognize and think of your company more favorably because of the donation.
