Is there a difference between a philosopher and a philosophist? Is "philosophist" a word? Is a philosopher the same as philosophizer?

A philosopher is someone who studies the nature of reality, mind, perception, self, free will, causation, time and space, and moral judgements.

A Philosophizer is someone who is speculating in the manner of a philosopher. "thefreedictionary" treats it as a real word. I have experience it used in a "colloquial" fashion to describe someone who demonstrates the mannerisms of a philosopher. It does have a second definition: to set forth or express a moralistic, often superficial philosophy.

And a philosophist is a pretender in philosophy.

So, in some cases, a philosopher would not be the same as a philosophizer, but in most cases, yes, they would be similar.

A philosophist is a "pretender in philosophy", a philosopher is someone that "speculate in a philosophical manner" which is the meaning of philosophize. A philosophizer is not a real word, and doesn't need to be since philosopher covers that meaning by definition.

To throw something else into the ring: In some European countries you will hear the word: "Philisoph". This may be a serious reference to someone's intellectual abilities...or it may be used sarcastically as in : "He's a real Philisoph, that guy!"
