Is there a company that I can use to do an online raffle of prizes that I donate for charity?

It is the end of the year and I am cleaning out the house. I have a ton of great tech toys that were given to me that I do not use. I was hoping to be able to run a few raffles on my blog of the items and have the proceeds go to charity. I know that there are a lot of legal issues around doing this which is why I was hoping that I could outsource to a 3rd party company.

I can Google around myself to try and find one of these companies. The best answer will be chosen for the person that not only finds a company that does this but that also makes sure that they are the best in the space.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Yes, there are actually several depending upon the size. Each is set up to meet the needs of charity or not for profit organizations or others interested in raising funds for charitable organizations. Here are a few - I'm not affiliated with any nor have any specific preference other than the fact I occassionally browse or buy items.

eBay now has an automated system that can donate the money to charity for you. They even have a list of charities you can look at. I think they're the best because they obviously have a huge customer base, but also they're extremely trustworthy and it's surprisingly easy.

I am quite confused with your question.. You mentioned that you have a ton of great tech toys that you want to be raffled on your blog. So how are you going to give to charity if you will give away these gadgets?

If you want, you can sell your gadgets on ebay. After selling all items, you can donate to CNN. They have a list of charity that are in great need for refugees, poverty, health, natural disasters, children, and more.. This is their website: http://edition.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2007/impact/?iref=impactglobal

Honestly, it is very hard to ask a certain foundation to do a raffle(even if the prize will be given by you). Here is their point: If you really want to help, you do not need prizes. As a matter of fact, most people who donate are anonymous.

But I get your point. You want to have a raffle like that of Pat Phelan and donate the proceeds to charity. Do you have paypal? You can embed a donation button to your blog and tell your visitors that once they donate (a certain amount) by clicking the button, they have one raffle entry. The best thing to do to stimulate them to donate is to take a picture of your prizes and post it in your blog. If you already accumulated enough amount for your charity, let's say the http://www.childrensaidsociety.org/ you can pick up the winner randomly. You will know who donated because they appear in your paypal account. Through that, you can help to charity.

Sorry for the confusion. A friend of mine, Pat Phelan, www.patphelan.net, jsut did something similar to what I want to do. He told people to donate $5 to a charity of his choice which entered you to win a phone that he was giving away. I thought it would be fun to do with some of my stuff. He is in Ireland so he did not have to worry about the US laws.

Why not just give away the tech toys? Many charities run stores that sell items for cheap so impoverished people can afford them, but then what profit is made also goes to the charity.

The Salvation Army stores are all over and are known for giving the majority of their money to their clients and not their staff.

Honestly, because it is not what I want to do. There are specific charities that I support that I would like something like this addressed to. My hope would also be that I would get more attention to these charities in the process.

Yes, I understand.

Well, here (http://rafflefaq.com/united-states-raffle-laws/) is a list of U.S. state raffle laws.

It appears that what you are looking to do isn't very easy. The laws in some states are very strict, and it looks like you would have to pick a charity and then have THEM do the raffle for you as most state laws say that they can only be done by not-for-profit groups with a license to hold charitable gaming activities.

Your best bet would honestly be calling your state's attorney general's office and explaining the situation. That is really the only way you can make sure your butt is covered legally for certain.
