Is the world flat?

I am referring to Thomas L. Friedman's book "The World is Flat".
Tip for best answer: M$0.50
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

According to Friedman it is, with all that outsourcing mess. It's kind of hard to compete with Indian computer programmers when India's gifted population outnumber the entire US adult workforce. Also, it's kinda hard to compete with people who will work for third world wages i.e. $2 per hour. They are cheaper and smarter than me. But I still have hope for things that have cultural cache and special niche markets that can't be outsourced or reproduced easily (unique writing and content development.) A global audience is an exciting thing and people who export authentic products that are in demand overseas may soon see their markets grow, even if their local market won't buy it. I like to think that the playing field has leveled somewhat, or maybe drastically. And I'm particularly excited about international exchanges that weren't possible before.

Litterally no

In the way that the book is intending absolutely. My wife owns an etsy shop. She can sell to people accross the world and often does.

I joke that sure my wife is not super famous here but she is HUGE overseas, and on the internet she is kind of a big deal* ^_^

A single crafter having a network that allows her to reach customers on a global scale would have been unheard of just a few decades ago. Now we kind of take it for granted.

* If you are a knitter or spinner
