is the Waterpik bad for your gums? My dentist told me the high-setting (10) could loosen your gums from your teeth. True?

Yes, it can cause damage. If the waterpik is turned up too high and it sprays down into your gums it can dislodge some of the small ligaments that connect your teeth to your gums. You are supposed to hit your teeth at a 90 degree angle instead of putting the water directly into your gums. Sending it across the top of the gums is will create a suction that will pull out any debris that has settled below your gum line.

A Waterpik oral irrigator is great for your gums. But, yes having it cranked up to the highest setting is not necessary and may cause damage. Used at a moderate speed, an oral irrigator is 93% more effective than flossing in eliminating and preventing gingivitis (gum disease), so don't be discouraged from using it.
