Is the the NDM-1 superbug the only superbug that we have to worry about?

I watched the news last night to be able to know more about NDM-1 superbug. And I heard that microbiologists are concerned about other superbugs. Aside from NDM-1 what other superbugs (like Swine Flu, MSRA etc) should we be concerned about?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Nice question @annelisle. The NDM-1 superbug is not the only superbug that we have to worry about. But it is the one with the highest hype now.

There have been other superbugs in the past, but they are not so talked about today. They are still resistant to antibiotics in some stages of their development in the system of a patient. These superbugs include MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) , E.coli, Salmonella, Ebola, H1N1 (swine flu), Acinetobacter baumannii, Clostridium difficile, Streptococcus and Enterococcus and West Nile virus.

The E.coli and salmonella cause serious infections when a patient consumes contaminated food or takes any drink that has been contaminated by these bacteria. They have been found to be resistant to a lot of antibiotics and can even cause death in some patients.

The same goes for the other pathogens such as the Ebola, H1N1 (swine flu), Acinetobacter baumannii, MRSA, Clostridium difficile, Streptococcus and Enterococcus and West Nile virus.

Whilst we need to be aware of any serious threats to our health, I think it is very important to keep a sense of proportion concerning these super bugs.

If you do the research, the list of bugs that we could possibly be exposed to is going to be endless.

Similarly, we can also worry about the artificial additives, growth enhancers, steroids, hormones and heaven knows what else in our food. Unfortunately, this is all now part of modern life.

I'm not saying we should ignore the situation, but it's a bit like having a medical dictionary on your bookshelf, you can become fixated and convince yourself that you have all sorts of things wrong with you.

Other than applying common sense and avoiding exposure to the new microscopic army of nasties that are out to get us, I think we should try to keep the situation in perspective.

I'm sure the chances are higher of getting hit by a bus than contracting one of these super bugs at least for now.
