Is the 'Tea Party' concept healthy for American Politics?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Is the "concept" healthy absolutely. This is a group that on paper is a bi-partisan organization created to spread awareness of out of control spending and limit taxation encouraging growth of small and large business. Following the ideal it is grass roots politics at its best. I was one step away from signing on.

HOWEVER

In practice it is a lap dog republican organization that seems dedicated to ousting republican moderates. It lost all credibility for me when they had Sara Palin stump for them. She is popular with specific religious right groups due to her tough anti-gay rights and anti-abortion policy. Sara has a well documented history of raising taxes, raising spending, and quitting if things get tough.

If the Tea Party was serious about the tax issues being the key to their stance I imagine they could of found someone who hasn't raised taxes & spending to speak for them.

No. What America needs is more informed voters. It doesn't need a revival of the Know-Nothing Party from the middle of the 19th Century. That party, you may recall, came into brief prominence as the Whig party collapsed and the Civil War loomed. Hopefully this time it is a sign of the Republican party collapsing and not a looming civil war. Will a new, progressive party spring up, as the Republican party did then? That would be good.

I don't like giving this kind of answer, but in my opinion, it depends on how things play out. To me, the 'tea party' isn't necessarily a party in the two party system. Rather, it's a group of concerned citizens that dislike current policy regarding the economy, spending and taxation. I would agree the majority of the group makeup is conservative, but the common goal is the removal of current crop of bureaucrats and replace them with people (hopefully) less likely to spend the nation into oblivion.

Awesome question!
