The Usui System of Reiki is a system of hands-on healing which originated with Mikeo Usui. It is not associated with any specific religion, but it is spiritual in that practitioners must focus on feeling and directing energy flow.
As with many disciplines, using the symbols in Reiki assists the practitioner in focus. Reiki is the manipulation of universal energy for the purpose of healing. Reiki practioners are "attuned" by Reiki masters in a series of six different attunements (two per level). which involve the use of symbols and ritual.
My personal analogy is that being a Reiki practitioner is like being an electrical conduit: the greater the level of attunement, the more energy I can transmit without ill affect to the conduit (me). I am neither the provider/creator of the energy nor the repository for it. However, whatever natural resistance I might have (whatever energy needs I might have) will be satisfied by the flow of energy through me to the recipient.
The actual concept of attunement is not that different than the concept of "tuning" a crystal radio set to provide the best possible reception/transmission. In the case of Reiki, the master tunes the students in steps (six separate attunements) to enable them to receive and transmit healing energy (the energy of creation, the energy which defeats, entropy) to recipients who wish to be healed of physical, mental, and/or emotional afflictions.
Beginning Reiki students (level one, the first two attunements) learn about using Reiki on themselves and/or those with whom they are in direct contact with without the use of symbols. Intermediate Reiki students (level two, the second two attunements) learn about practicing Reiki at a distance using symbols. The symbols are only given to Reiki students and the writing or transmission of the symbols in publications is frowned upon. Master Reiki students (level 3, the third two attunements) are those seeking to become Reiki Masters and learn the symbols and rituals associated with the attunement of all levels.
Depending upon the Reiki Master or school, progression through the levels may take only days or weeks (this practice is frowned upon), or may take many years.
While the use of symbols is encouraged, especially with newer practitioners, it is not mandatory so long as the practitioner is able to achieve the necessary level of focus. In everything we do, driving, mowing a lawn, writing an article, answering a question, we each follow some "ritual" which allows safe practices and best results. So it is with Reiki. Even so, sometimes, for the sake of expediency, we skip some portion of those rituals.
In summary, Reiki energy treatments by beginning practitioners will not include symbolism (although they will still use ritual hand placements to provide energy). Reiki energy treatment by long-time Reiki practitioners also may not include symbolism, depending on their level of focus.

Reiki symbols are sacred healing symbols. They enhance the flow of Life Force Energy. These symbols open doors to higher levels of awareness and manifestation. The symbols represent certain energies, chakras, mantras and power. Reiki symbols are important for energy treatment because using these symbols at the right time can greatly benefit the practitioner and others around them.
