is the regular white macbook worth buying over the macbook pro ?

I liked the white Macbook better than the older model unibody Macbook, which didn’t have FireWire. With the newer unibody Macbook Pros adding Firewire 800 and the ability to upgrade to 8GB of RAM and adding the SD card slot, I like the unibody models better. Whether they are worth the price difference is up to you. The white Macbook still has some minor advantages, the ability to swap out the battery easily, and it is easier to replace memory and the hard disk.

Personally I'm a bigger fan of the Unibody models (MacBook Pros), but it ultimately depends on your needs and use case. Take a look at Which MacBook are you? on apple.com.
