Is the phrase "take a cold shower" just code?

This guy said that he watched some girls dance and had to take a cold shower. Was that his polite way of saying something else? Do men really take cold showers or is that just code?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

"Take a cold shower" is universal code for Holy Bejezus that girl was smokin'!!!!! It is more polite than saying I had to take a cold shower so my pants would not feel so tight. And, yes some men really do take cold showers. We lead a sad sad life.

I like your humor @bwell79. But men don't lead a sad life... pitiful maybe, but never sad.

I've adopted @buddawiggi's term for when we see something quite the opposite. Whenever we've had enough of gross, sad or disturbing stuff, we always make sure to take an 'emotional shower'. I like this one since since it's open to more than just the pitifully horny.

While a cold shower would work, I very much doubt that anyone actually goes so far as to take one. The phrase originally was used as advice to someone who seemed to be too aroused rather than something anyone would deliberately do.

The usage is quite modern because cold showers were the rule until recently. I didn't spot any examples before 1970. Cold showers have long been used to wake up, to "cure" hangovers, and as fad health schemes.

It may interest you that one of the first references I found, from Dear Abby in 1970, has a woman being told to take a cold shower when she is feeling amorous.

Taking a cold shower means that the guy was turned on and wanted to calm down. Meaning, He wanted to gain control of his being turned on. For a guy there is nothing sexy about taking a cold shower. It "cools the jets." It turns you off. So when someone says take a cold shower, really they are saying your too h***y jump in the ice cold shower and that fixes that situation.

I think cosmopinkice was thinking about 'men doing things in the shower' as the code.

I didn't even think about them doing something alternative in the shower to release that 'energy'.

Well, so far it seems that it doesn't mean what you and I think it is cosmopinkice.

See my answer--it will clear up any question.

And a reminder, too, kids, that cold constricts vessels--blood won't through veins and arteries in a guy's lap..well, I'm not teaching Anatomy & Physiology. If you don't know what I'm talking about, read "Physiological Causes" on this page:

Maybe never done on Mahalo before...answering a question with a demonstration you can do.

Dim the lights and play this for effect as you read the answer and try the demo. Hit it, Marvin.

Cosmo--

It is code, but then again, it has real roots and it really happens.

My new favorite reference tool, urbandictionary.com, gives this relevant definition:

1.) Something frequent amongst college students living in a dorm.

2.) The penis's worst enemy

Regardless of gender, because women say it too, get yourself good and aroused.

Maybe not even all that good. Even a little is sufficient for this illustration.

While on Cloud 9, or on your way up, depending on how fast your engine is, stop for a second.

Dump a nice, tall glass of ice water in your lap.

Did you just say "OH SH*T?" There's your answer. Code and not code.

Urbandictionary is totally worthless. Anyone at any time may add anything. It is not edited or peer reviewed, and the folks that vote seem to vote by how amusing the definition is rather than how correct it may be. Any citation from the urbandictionary.com is worse than no citation at all.

It's not exactly Merriam-Webster, but the question is about a colloquial term--so where better to get its meaning than from people who use the term?

But, just so we're on the up and up, from American Heritage Dictionary::

"The allusion in this term is to the unexpected and not always pleasant effect of an ice-cold shower."

That would be, as I indicated, "The 'OH, SH*T!' Factor."
