Is the otterhound becoming extinct?
There isn't very many otterhounds left in the world. Is this dog breed becoming extinct? If so why is the number declining? Are these dogs high maintenance and people don't want to adopt them or do they no longer serve any purpose? If these are becoming extent, what can be done to save these animals? Do you think a use could be developed to save these dogs? How much does it cost to adopt an otterhound? Does the cost keep people from purchasing these dogs? Or is it just simply very difficult to find one to adopt?

Yes, the otterhound is becoming extinct. There are said to be only an estimated 1,000 or so Ottherhounds worldwide and somewhere between 350 and 400 in the US. In the early 20th century when otter hunting was a popular sport, Otterhound were not numerous. They are considered as the most endangered dog breed in Britain since there were only 51 born there in 2006. They are included in the list of Vulnerable Native Breeds as identified by the UK Kennel Club. And there are many organizations that created to save this breed.
Otterhound fanciers are against breeding of the dog for shows and so it is not very popular as a pet or show dog.
