Is the Harry Potter movie based on any older plot lines?

While there are no specific Greek myths granting power to purely human children, you could say it is similar to the story of Hercules. Hercules grew up not knowing he was the son of a God. He grew up raised by his adoptive parents. The big difference between Hercules and Harry Potter is that Hercules had adoptive parents who loved him. He was inexplicably strong, but that later came to be known when he found out he was the son of Zeus. Then it all began to make sense. Much like Harry's parents, Zeus could not undo what had been done when Hercules was stolen from Mount Olympus and made human, but he could earn his place amongst the Gods. This is not similar to Harry Potter, but does lend itself to Harry learning to use his wizarding powers for good.
Voldemort could be likened to Hades. In Hercules, Hades does not want him returned to Mount Olympus and does everything he can to make the man/God fail. Much like Voldemort wanting to eliminate Harry's powers forever. While there is not a direct correlation, this is probably the closest Greek story related to the series.
