Latisse contains prostaglandin, which is a fatty acid derivative called bimatoprost. It is this active ingredient which causes eyelashes to grow darker and thicker.
As an unwanted collateral effect, prostaglandin can also stimulate hair growth outside the intended treatment area and provoke bacterial contamination of the follicle.
The risk has been determined severe enough for the FDA to send Allergan, the manufacturer of Latisse, a warning, stating that they are not providing enough warning to their customers about these risks.
