We do talk about how Thanksgiving came about because my youngest is 9 and loves the stories. It's a great day but a one of reflection as well---I lost both of my parents in the early 2000's so it's just my children and me now. Still it's a fabulous day to help others and enjoy a great meal together

That is so funny. My family used to do the same when I was little. I grew up in Germany and since we had a military base close by where my stepdad (who was retired military) worked, he used to take us there every year for Thanksgiving. It became our little family tradition, since the Germans don't actually celebrate this holiday. The best part for me was that they always gave out fresh fruits and nuts and little candies that were on display. Since those would have gotten thrown away at the end of the day we were free to take as many as we pleased.
Sadly, we don't visit soup kitchens and the like nearly as often as we should, though.
