Is tap water safe to drink?

My mom was always against taking tap water. She prefers to boil and filter it first before drinking. I grew up with that in mind and prefer to take bottled water now. I know that a lot of people drink tap water and allow their kids to do the same. Is tap water really safe to drink?

I think that if the water supplier claims it is okay for drinking for the most part it probably is. It's more about the taste. Having said that I can remember when we lived in Devon, England there was a huge inquiry about large levels of aluminum finding its way into the water supply at Camelford in nearby Cornwall and the associated health risks.

In North Devon, where we lived, the level of chlorine that was added was so high, it could be smelt, when you ran a tap.

I became fed up with buying filters and bottled water when the water charges were the highest in the country so I complained, a lot. Finally South West Water came and fitted a filter in the system which improved the quality of the water.

Here in Spain the water is rated "potable", safe for drinking, we do in tea or coffee. For cold drinking we usually buy bottled, it is very cheap and does taste much better.

We are also lucky to have free water fonts of drinking water in almost every town, which is spring water and tastes very good.

Well to be completely honest this is a loaded question. If you live inside the US then the FDA regulates all tap water and it's perfectly safe to drink assuming you think the regulations and things we test for encompass every possible thing that could poison your water supply.

If you live outside the US it varies country to country.

A good for instance NYC tap water is suppose to be some of the cleanest/best water in the world. Many studies/taste tests and such have been done on it proving over and over again the same thing. Most people can't tell the difference between it and bottled water and in some cases the tap water wins on both cleanliness and taste.

The best although maybe ilreverant look was done by the show BullSh!t.

Many governments are trying to serve safe water. There are a lot of reports of unsafe tap water. Safe tap water depends on the country and agency who is supplying the tap water.
Usually, tap water is supposed to be safe. But for drinking it must be properly boiled and cool to drink.

It depends on where you live. In the US the water coming out of the tap is required to meet certain standards to ensure that it is safe to drink.

Just because it is safe to drink doesn't make it taste good. Filtering water will make it taste better.

Tap water is better than drinking from a plastic bottle. Plastic water bottles contain BPA which is an industrial chemical. Drink tap water and use a filter to avoid lead.

This is a good article...

I think drinking tap water is not always safe. If you drink it after filtration, then it is quite safe to drink. Clean water is not always available, so water filters can purify the water you want to drink. You can choose from a number of water filter options to clean your water like Biosand Filters, Ceramic Pot Filters, or Hollow Fiber Membrane Filters. Learn more about these filters visit http://www.clean-water-for-laymen.com/ Stay away of drinking raw tap water which is not filtered or properly boiled.

It depends on where you live. I drink the tap water where I live, but I've also tested it.

Bottled water is a lot of hype, I will NOT waste my money. If I was concerned, I'd rather buy a filter or boil it than pay to the multi-million dollar bottled water companies who prey on people. (half of this paragraph was opinion... based on FACT).
