Is studying geology relevant to learning about volcanos?

Since geology is the study of the Earth and all the processes that happen on Earth, learning about volcanoes is relevant to this subject.
Volcanoes are formed due to the movement of tectonic plates. Plate tectonics is a major topic in geology. If you want to investigate the physical aspects of a volcano, a text specific to geology is ideal. If you want to investigate how the people living around the volcano are affected by the volcano's dormancy or eruption then studying geology would be irrelevant. If you want to investigate how volcanoes affected prehistoric life (like dinosaurs), studying paleontology would be your best bet.
From a general standpoint, geology would be the subject of study closest to learning more about volcanoes. From the way volcanoes are formed to the times volcanoes are expected to erupt are all topics relevant to geology.
