Is stockpiling considered hoarding?

I often use coupon codes when buying groceries because it really helped ease up my budget. I learned this when I was still single and now that I have a growing family I use them more often. I usually stockpile items like toilet paper, trash bags, laundry soap, cleaning supplies because these items does not spoil. One of my friend told me that I am hoarding. I was caught off guard and wondered if she's right. Is it hoarding when I stockpile items?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

There are people who are addicted to coupons and/or do hoard these types of items. I've seen some people on several t.v. programs that have a problem with this. I also knew a lady personally that did this. It's one thing to get something on sale and stock up. However, if you have 50 bottles of laundry soap, it's time to stop buying until you use some of that up. Contrary to belief, if you keep it long enough, it will go bad.

Once you stop using products because they go bad, then it's hoarding. If a product is bad, then it's useless. As long as you are using all of the products you buy, before they go bad, and as long as you are stocking up on items you actually use... then you are okay. If not, it's hoarding in my opinion.

This lady I knew had two entire rooms of her home filled with food. She had a fear she would run out. Another sign of hoarding is using room in your home for the stuff you buy, that you otherwise need. It starts to slowly take over your home. If you are not extending beyond the stockpile area, then you are good. If you are throwing away the boxes, bottles and packages, then you are good as well.

You could always use this rule:
6 months worth of non perishables at a time
3 months worth of perishables at a time

I also have a stockpile but mine is mostly food. I get several boxes from Angel Food Ministries and I fill up my freezer. My husband is a self-employed carpenter so it’s always feast or famine so I stock pile mostly food but other items too. We never know when work might slow down and we would need all the income to pay bills. Therefore, I see nothing wrong with stockpiling.

However, hoarding is a separate can of worms from stockpiling. In my opinion hoarding is the collection of mostly useless things to the point where a person cannot move through their home, cannot part with things, does not allow others to see their home, does not leave their home, and lacks hygiene and doesn't clean house.

I do not consider that to be hording, as we all need to stretch our budgets. If you have way more of those products than your family could ever possibly use, then yeah I would consider tat hording. If you have cases of toilet paper or paper towels, that would fill a warehouse that is a problem!

To stock up on the essentials is a smart move in case of in-climate weather, job loss, or a reduced paycheck. Those things are necessary and if you can get a good deal on them and store them properly, I say do it. It’s much better to be prepared than do without when it is needed.

I try to stock up on toilet paper, paper towels, shampoo, laundry soap, and dish soap whenever there is a good deal. These items will say forever if stored the right way and eat away at a tight budget in lean times.

I don't think it's hoarding at all, not as long as you have a limit as to how much of any one item you have before purchasing anymore. For example, if you set a limit to ten of any one particular item and buy again when you get down to around 4 or 5 to stock up to 10, then I don't see anything wrong with it. Particularly when you are purchasing the items at a discount. Anyone should want to save money and you are just taking advantage of the coupons and being able to shop more frugally. I would do the same thing.

The items you mentioned that you are stockpiling are items that are generally more on the expensive side compared to food. Of course itmes such as soap, toilet paper, shampoo and cleaning supplies last longer and you might not need to purchase the for a long time. But even having said that, they don't spoil so I commend you for doing this and saving money in the process.
