Is Star Office the same as Open Office?
Where would I find information on whether Star Office is the same program as Open Office? Is Star Office a takeoff of Open Office?

While StarOffice and OpenOffice are closely linked and based on the same code and open standards, they are not exactly the same program. Both programs are based on the same code that was purchased from StarDivision by Sun Microsystems in 1999. Sun Microsystems open sourced the code that they bought and a broader community (including Sun developers) contributed to the project.
From there, Sun Microsystems took one snapshot of the code and then added features and functions that they felt were important. Sun then packaged a version of that software and sold that product commercially. Sun also provides customers support for StarOffice which is one difference between that product and OpenOffice.
