Is soccer the most popular sport in the world?

Quite simply, yes.
Soccer is truly a worldwide sport, and considering that we, the all-changing Americans, are the only people who call it soccer should tell you something.
Even though it is a distant 5th in the states (but growing in popularity – please see the signings of aging superstars Thiery Henry and David Beckham in the MLS), you’d be hard-pressed to miss it anywhere else. From the slums of Central America to the streets of Europe, if they’re doing one thing, it’s playing futbol. It’s no surprise that the World Cup is the largest watched sporting event in the world, even surpassing both the Winter and Summer Olympics.
Google payrolls, and “most expensive sport franchises in the world” and you’ll see more than a handful of Futbol, “Soccer” clubs at the top of the list.
As a Red Devil (Manchester United) supporter, I only know one way… “Glory, Glory Man United!”
