Though Santa Monica is part of Los Angeles County and bordered on three sides by the city of Los Angeles, it is actually its own city. Santa Monica was founded in 1875 when Colonel Robert S. Baker and Nevada Senator John P. Johns subdivided some land that was part of Rancho San Vicente y Santa Monica and created the town of Santa Monica. They then sold land within the town (bordered on the northwest by Montana Ave and southeast by Colorado Ave) in July of 1875.
Today, Santa Monica is home to nearly 90,000 residents and is about 16 square miles.
