Is San Diego a generally safe city?

How high is the crime rate? How does it compare to Los Angeles?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I spent the last two years living in San Diego, CA, and generally, San Diego is a very safe city, and Wikitravel agrees, “San Diego is considered to be one of the safest cities in California.” As with any major city, however, crime does exist in San Diego, but overall, violent crime is decreasing. Before visiting or moving to San Diego, you can view real time crime reports of the neighborhood that you plan to be staying in.

San Diego is broken up into several neighborhoods, and some areas are safer than others to be in at night. Some of the neighborhoods include the Gaslamp, Hillcrest, North Park, Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, and Mission Beach. Some of the area that you should try to avoid walking in at night are Barrio Logan, located near the Coronado Bridge, and City Heights.

For emergency situations, dial 911, and for non-emergency situations, for example, to report a crime in progress, dial (619) 531-2000.

San Diego has an average crime rate as compared to all cities in the nation. Its rating for 2008 was 315 per 100,000 population as compared to the national average of 320 per 100,000.

It has a slightly lower rating than Los Angeles, which had a crime rate of 349 per 100,000 in 2008.

In both of these cities there was an apparent decrease in crime rates as compared to 2005.
