Is Ryan Howard's new contract fair or is he overpaid?
Ryan Howard recently signed a contract extension that will pay him $125 million over the next five years. That works out to $25 million a year. Does this seem a little pricey for a first baseman who is pretty one dimensional offensively?
Howard always hits for pretty good power, but his average is never much higher than the .260-.270 range and he strikes out quite a bit. Considering this means he’s being paid more than Albert Pujols, who is arguably one of the best players in the game, is this kind of money fair? Did the Phillies overpay so they could lock in a fan favorite or do you think the club really believes that he is worth so much money?

Hey this is a real good question. There is no way Ryan Howard should be paid more than Albert Pujols of the St Louis Cardinals or Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers. Both those first baseman hit for power and perennially drive in more than a 100 runs a year. Albert Pujols has made himself into an outstanding defensive first baseman and Cabrera is on his way. When you also throw in the fact that Albert and Miguel are both lifetime .300 hitters, it makes that salary really interesting. Now the Tigers have locked up Cabrera for the next few years, but I would be willing to bet if all 3 contracts came up for renewal in the same year and all 3 players were eligible for free agency that you would see Howard with the lower amount of the three contracts. The value of a contract is based on the time it is signed, so as dollar values continue to grow you will see contracts follow. Especially for the superstars. Anyway you look at it, the athletes are grossly over-payed and the public is really paying their salaries. It will need to stop someday, but when is the question. It looks like contracts negotiations were a little tougher this year because of the state of the economy. Not for all, but for some.
