Is romance just the heady, intoxicating beverage to bring people initially together?

No. True romance is way more than that. True romance doesn't die out after a while. Sexual infatuation does, and many people confuse the two and that is why so many divorces occur. True romance can last a lifetime but both people have to truly want it to last that long for it to not be merely a seed of sexual infatuation that never grew and matured in the gardens of each others hearts. And no romance that lasts comes easy. There is effort involved and even if it is just a little red flower a man picks up on the side of the road to bring to his woman to keep the romance going there is still a bit of a choice to make an effort.

No... in fact, it's actually pretty important to keep the romance alive even after marriage and children. I think romance comes more naturally initially and requires more thought once a couple reaches a certain comfort level. Still, it's definitely important to continue to try to impress each other even when you know you've gotten someone "hook, line, and sinker." It's all about the little things, like date nights, remembering special occasions, etc.

It's something like that. You can keep romance alive, but you need a meeting of the minds and genuine care for each other for it to last. The exciting sensations may fade a little, but the deep, connection love can last a lifetime. Just never let anything come between you and the person you love. No deception, secrets, anger, resentment, etc. Start with romance and build.

Falling and/or being in love is a state of mind, where as love is more. Romance is something that is often incorporated into the relationship and may or may not bring people together. I've seen some couples with no romance and others who still have this element years after being together. Me for example, I'm not at all a romantic. Yes, I love my husband and I'm in love with him but I never have and never will be a romantic person. So, it can't be the initial thing that brings people together for all people anyway. This is usually lust my friend.
