Is revenge sweet?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Revenge is like fruit that's rotten on the inside. The first bite might be good, but after that it's a mouthful of decay.

The idea that "revenge is sweet" is a proverb has been part of our society for so long that the origins of it has been lost. However, several people have adapted the quote to their purposes:
1. In Paradise Lost, John Milton wrote "Revenge, at first though sweet, / Bitter ere long back on itself recoils."
2. Emile M. Cioran said, "Revenge is not always sweet, once it is consummated we feel inferior to our victim."
3. Mason Cooley said, "Revenge is sweet but not nourishing.".
4. Alfred Hitchcock had a similar feeling when he said, "Revenge is sweet and not fattening."

But no matter what people say, science shows that revenge is pleasurable. According to a Swiss study, acts of revenge stimulate an area of our brain that is involved with enjoyment or satisfaction. However, we use another area of our brain (the prefrontal cortex) to weigh the costs of seeking revenge to the satisfaction we might receive. It is this area that keeps most of us from becoming self-destructive.

It is more cool and refreshing, like a cold beer.

Briefly.

And if you have a conscience, it will haunt you once the satisfaction wears off.

I'm not sure if it is sweet, but it is cold.

"Revenge is a dish best served cold. And Kirk ... it is very cold ... in space."
- Khan Noonian Singh, Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan

This line is cited as an 'ancient Klingon proverb', but it is actually from the 18th century French novel 'Les liaisons dangereuses'.
