is Prince William's engagement announcement really that important?

Prince William popped the question to Kate Middleton during a "private holiday" in Kenya last month, the wedding is scheduled for spring or summer of 2011. Even though the wedding is expected to be as big as the late Princess Diana's, is it really that important?

It could very well be. William is second in line for the throne, so him getting married means she could become the next Queen of England. Granted, in my eyes the entire idea of royalty -the idea that are more important than others for no other reason than the family you were born into- is a ridiculous, outdated notion; but regardless, it IS something that may one day be taught in history classes, so yes, I think it's important.

It's important in the way that it's a bit of joy in the news, rather than another bombing or other crime or war. Weddings touch peoples hearts and take their minds off their own problems for a little while. Weddings give hope. Plus a lot of people felt sorry for Diana's boys when she died. A wedding shows that at least one of them has found some level of happiness.

It does give the people of England happiness and hope seeing how the Royal Family's been through hard times over the past number of years.

It could be important. If, as suggested in a recent question about solving the budget deficit, the USA's military budget is eliminated, and if then the Canadians send the Mounties charging down and overrun the country, why then Prince William might eventually become the King of the USA. That would be the first since George III.
