Is Pinks Hotdog in Hollywood worth waiting in that line just to eat a hot dog?

I just moved to Hollywood and everytime I drive down La Brea I am taken back by the constant 40 to 150 people in line at PINKS on Melrose/La Brea. Everyone that I know cannot seem to give me a convincing answer either way so I turn to you Mahalo. Are those hot dogs worth waiting in a huge line to eat?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

You are lucky. It would appear that the local icon hot dog is actually a quality dog, all beef with a casing that snaps. That's something hot dog fans care about. Here in New Orleans our famous Lucky Dogs are foul creations of unknown meat products and soggy casings.
Your local reviewers only give it 1 and 1/2 dogs, so the competition is probably even better hot dogs elsewhere in Los Angeles. In fact it's the lowest rating of the 15 places Hotdogspot reviewed. Pink's main attraction seems to be its record of drawing stars as customers for the last 70 years. So it's sort of a celebrity restaurant that ordinary folks can afford, in a way.
But the answer to your question is almost certainly no. That's because they have 4 locations and are open 9:30 am to 2:00 am every day (3 on weekends). If they all had lines like that all the time they would open more outlets. Probably you just have to pick the right ones at the right times to avoid lines. Check out their web site.

This is a polarizing topic. Many commenters, especially on Yelp and Chowhound, are scathing about Pink's. Personally I think their chili dog is decent. The hot dog itself is unremarkable but the chili is good. Carney's on Sunset and in Studio City does a much better one.

But Pink's isn't really about the food. It's about visiting an LA landmark and participating in an archetypal LA experience. You should definitely try it at least once.

For truly excellent hot dogs I like the following places:

Fab Hot Dogs
6747 Tampa Ave, Reseda, CA 91335

Fab opened last summer to rave reviews. They do really excellent "rippers" -- New Jersey-style hot dogs deep-fried until they rip -- and bacon dogs. They use Vienna Beef dogs -- the gold standard for hot dogs. They also do amazing tater-tots. Unfortunately it's a bit of a drive from Hollywood.

Vicious Dogs
5231 Lankershim Blvd, North Hollywood, CA 91601
818-985-3647

They are closer to Hollywood (just over the bump) and do a great Chicago dog. They use Vienna Beef dogs, too.

And, finally:

Carney's
8351 W Sunset Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90069
323-654-8300
http://www.carneytrain.com/

Carney's is closer yet, has very good chili dogs, and is open until midnight.

Save your precious time, Pink's is a badly-managed tourist trap that makes you stand in a long line for mediocre food.

If you want a great chili dog, go to Carney's on Sunset Bl (or their alt branch in Studio City) instead.

Absolutely not. Pinks is overpriced and not very good. Take La Brea to the 10. The 10 to the 405 south to LAX. Board a plane to Chicago and visit any hot dog stand there.

If you are by Pinks and need to kill time, browse the wonderful Golden Apple Comics around the corner.
