Notebooks for iPad is a note taking application by Alfons Schmid and costs $8.99. From what I researched, it appears that the Notebooks app is a favorite among writers, students and researchers. This app is full featured and is sophisticated and has powerful features and was really developed to be used for serious research and writing. If you are just looking for an app to make shopping lists or quick notes, this application is probably overkill with all the extra features it has.
If you are looking for a simple, note taking application, Simplenote is probably better for you and it is no charge through iTunes. Most people use Simplenote to list ideas, keep notes, make shopping lists and all kinds of listing work. The notes you create are automatically synchronized with your computer and is very simple to use. It is not totally featureless in that it has pins, versions, sharing and tags.
The bottom line is what you want the app to do for you. If you want to use the app to research and write articles, you probably will want to go the extra mile and purchase Notebooks for iPad. If you just need a note taking application, Simplenote will probably work great for you.
