MySQL continues to be open source despite the acquisition of Sun Microsystems in 2008. One of course can purchase an Enterprise license and additional training and support from partners and resellers.
There is concern among the open source community (see Closing Oracle out of open source?) that the pending acquisition of Sun by Oracle will put at risk the open source nature of MySQL. This commentary suggests that the MySQL community had enough clout with Sun Microsystems to keep it open source and so likely with Oracle (if the deal goes through).
