Is mononucleosis a type of Hepatitis?
I had mono when I was about 18 years old,and my urine turned a very dark color and I had jaundice. I went to the doctor thinking I had some form of really bad kidney infection. He told me that that mononucleosis was causing this. As I was leaving the office, I noticed my folder was labeled as hepatitis. Is mono a type of hepatitis? If so, what letter is it and do you have it forever?

No, mononucelosis is not a type of hepatitis. It is a viral infection that is very common in children and young adults around the world. One of the classic symptom is the swelling of the lymph nodes and the virus that causes this is the Epstein-Barr Virus or EBV. This virus can be transmitted from one person to another person.
However, with regards to hepatitis, mononucleosis if left untreated can cause complications and one of this is hepatitis. The mono complication does not always result from mononucelosis. Hepatitis condition linked to mono is generally mild but still it pose health risks and can be serious in some cases.
Hepatitis is a condition that involves inflammation of the liver and occurs in up to 90% of patients with infectious mononucleosis. Mono can cause the liver to be inflamed in approximately 1 out of every 10 people .
Mono-related hepatitis is due to the Epstein-Barr Virus which causes mono. When hepatitis is sever in persons diagnosed with mono, there should be further investigation on the cause beyond mono. In instances that are rare where there is chronic hepatitis, it cannot be transmitted to an individual's spouse or offspring.
