It is in its rawest form an herb because it comes from a plant. After you take it from the plant, you can make it into a drug and it becomes a hallucinogen because if smoked or orally consumed, it alters the perception of reality and causes distortions in sensory and perceptual experiences (i.e. hallucinations). It produces euphoria and relaxation as well as hallucinations. It is a stimulant in high doses and a depressant in low doses.
It is an herb because it is a plant that when plucked, can be consumed. It in some cases is used to medicinal properties to relax the patient and to treat glaucoma. It is currently being studied to see if may help treat HIV and nausea from chemotherapy. It also is orally taken (and smoked) illegally for flavor and scent.
