Is Mahalo Frontpage offensive to children using the website? Skin content needs to be reduced, in my opinion. To much Nudity. Click expose.

So no, I don't have a problem with the frontpage. As an example, the picture of 'Sex andthe City 'Samantha' shouldn't be a problem.
However, I have a bit of an issue with the same pictures in an office environment. If I visit a Mahalo page about any subject, the same 'Samantha' picture might cause some strange looks by people, as the picture appears to contain nudity at first sight.
This means I can't really use Mahalo at work, without keeping in mind who might be looking over my shoulder, which I think is a shame.
Yes indeed, I'm less bothered with children, than I am with my colleagues, but i guess that's how it is.. :)
My opinion

M$Mahalo has pushed the line of decency on its front page with "Need Sex Advice?" and "Should Prostitution be Legal?" but while putting their toe on the line they have not crossed it. It could be toned down a little and should be watched but this is the market place today. Skin Sells.
Take a look at the Huffington Post this morning they have "Meet Jessie James Mistress #2" and "PHOTOS: Bar Refaeli Models New Lingerie Line." While even on Fox news they have "Spring Bikini Bod Contest" and "Tiger and LeAnn Rimes!" with an unneccary picture of LeAnn in a bra.
I like Mahalo being a little edgy but it is hard not to cross the line. Mahalo can have discussions and topics that are taboo on Wikipedia or others and I like that. Yet pushing the line can cost more viewers than it will gain. We are all a little too obsessed with skin, both for seeing or to complain about it. In my opinion Janet Jakson's nipple exposure was the least offensive part of that Super Bowl's Halftime show that I would not want my kids to watch.
This is a good question and it should be an ongoing debate that should surface from time to time in both the visual and topics and text. Not just what should Mahalo do at the top level but we as contributors add to the site.

M$Having said that, they are obviously doing it for a shock factor and to help with traffic. It's kind of disappointing in my mind, because that's not what Mahalo is to me. It doesn't need boobs and skin to make me(and MOST) of it's core users to come back day after day. I guess if it draws more people into using the site and it makes then check out other "better" content, then so be it. I don't know about you, but when I come to Mahalo each and everyday, the first place I start is my profile page... I rarely ever see the homepage.

M$Mahalo could become popular in highschools and colleges? The future is difficult to predict. The question and answer is appealing to younger minds.
That's true too - to me, the url for Mahalo is answers.mahalo.com - I hardly ever see the front page.
The target group is middle aged adults. Public decency standards should apply because Mahalo is perceived as the question and answer service to Twitter. Facebook and myspace are becoming more sensitive to content allowing the user to block offensive content. I've proposed the same service.
i seldom see the front page, and if i would've seen it first, i probably would've never gotten involved with mahalo.
it makes mahalo look like a cheap gossip site.
Now i know why there are so many anonymous questions for pics of nude celebrities and links to sex tapes.
It's basically what we advertise ourselves to be.
Most of us who answer questions probably never see the front page.
I wonder what the traffic is like there?
i guess they gotta generate money some how, but if mahalo wants to be more reputable (which is what i think most of us want), its gonna have to stop selling its soul to the sophomoric interests of the gossip readers and perverts.

M$Just a quick glance at the front page - sex advice, should prostitution be legal, anne curtis bikini slip, joe biden drops f-bomb, and the whole dancing with the stars strip... sex sells I guess.
Again, it doesn't bother me, but I wouldn't visit Mahalo at work, and I wouldn't ever have my 9 year old niece visit Mahalo.

M$Like I said: parents:yes, niece:no. But this is a choice that those that run mahalo get to make, not us. Should mahalo use 'airport standards'? Only if they want to.
People are using mahalo at work. Businesses use facebook. Should airport standards for the front cover be applied to Mahalo?
Would you show Mahalo to your parents?
I would have no objections showing Mahalo to my parents, just like I wouldn't have any trouble showing them any other gossip site or magazine. It's actually quite up their alley, I suppose...
I don't really feel this is a site for children anyway, I can't remember the age limit. Lol But either way, the homepage doesn't look bad to me what so ever. Looking at it right now I see... 1 image of a woman wearing suspenders, which are covering her breast. That's the only thing that really shows a lot of skin. Yet, I still don't find it "offensive to children" honestly. For one, I really doubt 6-12( I don't think children of the ages of 6-11 should even be allowed to browse the net really) are even looking at this site. And even then, kids from the ages of 12-14 have seen much, much worse. And really, kids have already seen much, much worse. Magazines, TV shows, Movies... Show much, much more skin than the items on the homepage in my opinion. Plus, this is the net... They've probably already "explored" it. But since I'm pretty sure there's an age limit for this site, that means Mahalo is not held responsible for what ones child sees, and since this is an adult site it should be fine for it to show adult images, topics and videos.
Also, by looking at the homepage, I myself am not offended at all. This looks like an adult forum like site to me. It wouldn't of given me a single thought to not joining. I don't feel it makes the site look bad either.
But as above me, I would agree that I don't think anyone would want to visit this site at the workplace. But ya shouldn't anyway! you're at work :p hehe.

M$You would not be allow to show that image in a grocery store
Actually, if a grocery store carries magazines, then it would technically be showing that image. There's lots of magazines that have women half naked. Though, these photos are very artistic. You still see the fact they're barley clothed. Which is why I used it as an example, because it seems to be the basic point of the question. Also, families take their kids to the Beach... Have you seen the Bikinis women wear now? Skin is everywhere, it's nothing they haven't seen before even in real life. Due to the site being mainly for adults, it shouldn't have to change images simply to protect childrens eyes. Now nude pics are a different story, that's just not acceptable for this site no matter what the user.
The age limit seems to be 13, as state in a previous response.
There is a shock factor. I'm proposing that Mahalo allow customization of the front page and have the ability to remove images from the custom view. I don't like the constant shock factor.
Are you sure you are supposed to be here?
There should be more nudity on Mahalo if anything.
And, a lot more beer.

M$I wish you weren't so rude and your answer was unhelpful
Point 2 in "basic terms" in the mahalo terms of service: "You must be 13 years or older to use the Services."
I'm not sure I get your point... what obligation does Mahalo have to be "family friendly"?
If you are 14 then you have had (or are eligible to have) your bar mitzvah or bat mitzvah and are a man or woman. I have seen nothing on this site requiring more than that.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bar_and_Bat_Mitzvah
I find the folks who want to make all sorts of things "family friendly" or "child friendly" extremely annoying. Let kids watch Sesame Street or whatever. Lazy parents who don't want to supervise their kids have no business messing with the lives and entertainment of the rest of the world.
When I registered the website did not ask for age. I don't believe you.
Is the frontpage appropriate for a 14 year old? Assuming I'm older than 14 which I am.
First a side-note: You know you have the option to edit a comment, right? :)
Then on your suggestion: I think that an opt-out selection, or a 'reveal' button would be a wonderful solution. It would certainly help shield sensitive people.
However, I don't agree on your statement that the pictures on the frontpage somehow degrade women, but I respect that this is a more sensitive subject in the United States.
The nudity is half a person exposure with graphic detail but still offensive to women, in my opinion. Males see this nudity and it desensizes them to the proper respect of women
Mahalo is PG-13 or better and our Terms Of Service clearly state it is not intended for children.
Semi naked folks are on CNN, NYTimes, Huffington Post, NBC, ABC, ESPN, sports Illustrated and every other media property. I have no problem with people in bathing suites/underwear on the site. In fact, I'm personally OK with toplessness and would draw the line on anything more than that. However, we are going to keep the topless images to our NSFW area.

A 14 year or older child can acquire an account and so Mahalo content should be more shielded, as you have suggested. The disclaimer that Mahalo is not a child site does not apply. On the Web Mahalo is advertised as a website to earn money while answering questions. It is not advertised as a teenager or young adult site or a new Wiki model. Mahalo is called "the Human Search Engine".
I don't think the frontpage represents the brand correctly and Mahalo should emphasized the question and answer, as more, then it would fit the model of "Human Search Engine", as advertised.
Hmmm. Too late to edit my own previous comment, so I have to add a new one.
Mahalo doesn't show anything that isn't shown on any other freely accessible website on the Internet. I see no reason why Mahalo should be treated otherwise. The 'buzz' topics are exactly that: Anything that's buzzing on the internet. Which is a white guy in public transport beating up a black guy, a GOP senator shouting "You Lie", Starbucks Free Pastry Day, but indeed also "Octomom" being offered a porn job to pay off her debts, and a wardrobe malfunction.
And yes, the sex-related questions and 'conundrums' seem to get the most attention too. But that's the Internet for you.
One solution would be to hide the partial nudity with a click feature.
Another would be to have a hide feature. I don't like the shock factor when show Mahalo to professionals.
As for art vs vulgarity, I'd like to point at two sites. One is my personal mahalo page
called Nude Photography, featuring all kinds of nude photographers, which I definitely don't consider to be 'vulgar' in any way.
The second one is a virtual version of the Sistine Chapel, which is full of nudity, right in the middle of the Vatican. I don't think you'll easily find that many semi-nude bodies in one place, yet no-one considers that degrading or vulgar. So, as mostly, vulgarity is in the eye of the beholder, and what we find vulgar now, can easily be the norm in twenty years.
Cultural differences challenge context. China seems to favor censoring content and monitors internet activity and information. The rules in China differ and Google seems to be choosing non cooperation. Will Mahalo be acceptable in China?
There is a constant battle between Art, beauty verse vulgarity and degradation. It is a function of context. Sometimes beauty can be presented in a offensive context.
I personally would like the questions or page, imagery shielded with a rating, if it has partial nudity.
