Is -(-love)=apathy AND -(-hate)=apathy?

It is sometimes said that the opposite of love is apathy, not hate. Just as the opposite of hate is apathy not love. Can you think of any other opposite that is shared with another that is not the other?

Yes and yes.

I've sent dozens upon dozens of flowers, most times never touching a single one. I was a concierge. And guys will almost always pay ridiculous prices for delivery on Valentine's Day. They sent flowers and lost a good chunk of change.

Slightly ridiculous, but one can't get one's virginity back. So I guess in that setting, one gets something--experience--and at the same time that one loses something.

It all seems to be a matter of perspective doesn't it?
The good and the evil discussion which is directly related to the debate over the physical differences between dark and light matter. In fact, this questions generalized discussion can be broken down into the subatomic design of the micro and macro cosms which may exist. This discussion is an age old conversation amongst scientific intellects and philosophical sages. For example, Sir Henry Roscoe wrote, "In the vestibule of the Manchester Town Hall are placed two life-sized marble statues facing each other. One of these is that of John Dalton ... the other that of James Prescott Joule. ... Thus the honour is done to Manchester's two greatest sons—to Dalton, the founder of modern Chemistry and of the atomic theory, and the laws of chemical-combining proportions; to Joule, the founder of modern physics and the discoverer of the Law of Conservation of Energy. One gave to the world the final proof ... that in every kind of chemical change no loss of matter occurs; the other proved that in all the varied modes of physical change, no loss of energy takes place." (http://www.todayinsci.com/QuotationsCategories/L_Cat/Loss-Quotations.htm) On the other hand, if no bit of matter or energy are lost, where is a bio-genetically engineered being, whose core characters are split between man and woman, suppose to decide what is opinionated fact and what is imagined fantasy because on a constant basis every individual thoughtfully gains possessions and loses things.
Similarly thinking about these polar opposites and synonymous antonyms leads one to discover that like the yin and yang, each known living organism contains those anti-parallel polymer twins which are composed of countless pairs coordinated by individualized, but universal recipes, to make some healthy and some mutated forms of various consumers and producers. Ideas swirl around the compositions created by space and times ethereal continuum. The conglomeration and separations that are magnetically charged by the compass rose's spun directions are locked ultimately on the string theory's relative interpretation that life and death are simply a part of some greater existential double helix's massive being.
Ivan Pavlov was an ordinary person who became an academic legend with studies dealing with the diversity in psychological behaviors and tendencies. He wrote or was quoted as saying, "In the dog two conditions were found to produce pathological disturbances by functional interference, namely, an unusually acute clashing of the excitatory and inhibitory processes, and the influence of strong and extraordinary stimuli. In man precisely similar conditions constitute the usual causes of nervous and psychic disturbances. Different conditions productive of extreme excitation, such as intense grief or bitter insults, often lead, when the natural reactions are inhibited by the necessary restraint, to profound and prolonged loss of balance in nervous and psychic activity." (http://www.todayinsci.com/QuotationsCategories/L_Cat/Loss-Quotations.htm) This statement is about canines; however, all sentient beings react and interact differently. Everything chooses to translate their experiences positively or negatively. Sometimes like canines people can make the best out of a situation or the worst out of a situation, and most mindful creatures understand the fundamental differences between risk and reward. A dog, a cat, a mouse, a child, can all contemplate their decision making abilities, and how those decisions will effect them. Every person has only one of two decisions when they encounter any scenario, "They can laugh/smile or they can pout/frown." Although destiny and fate do naturally direct our lifestyles, every person has the inherited right to decide which thing they choose to do. Yoda said, "There is no try, there is only do or do not."
Right and wrong, moral or immoral, these are opposing viewpoints that are as old as societies' ability to relate these matters. Some believe that black holes are like galactic grim reapers whose self centered gravity turns everything to the dark-side like the demons of hell; whereas, others consider black holes to be the light benders and energetic epicenters. On this wikipedia link, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_hole, the consistency between the scientific hypotheses can easily be detected when it openly states, "A black hole is a region of space from which nothing, not even light, can escape...," but then later it goes onto discuss the black holes' relationship with the accretion of matter, like: quasars, active galactic nuclei, binary stars and x-ray binary stars.
In my opinion, people and our earthly planet are some where in the middle, that muted grey, black, white area between the shaded hues of color. If we were to stand on a star we could easily foresee the light rays and dark rays evaporating into linear perspectives where dusty particles would dot the horizons. In the same manner if we were to use our analytical thinking to project ourselves onto a speck of dust's surface, and again look into those speckled horizons we would then see stars streaming across the sky. The nurturing of natures sensual experience across levels and layers. Fengshui atmospheres vividly market-up Mendel's categorized efforts. The responsible use and the irresponsible abuse of the existential space and time.
But again, perspectives are as prismatic as the spectrum that lies between evidential allusions confusing vivid reasons.

I think the greatest bards and minds spanning every time-line, rich and poor people alike, and creatures big and small, have worked for better and more despite the lack of resources and their inabilities to fully appreciate the blessings which are resulting from their beings. Tragically, with so much suffering the priceless blessings which are abundantly distributed to each fairly healthy entity are less gratefully gathered, than the fearful worries.

The ignorance attached to the terrifying stigmas associated with the continued struggles so many endure is inspiring due to the truths tied to these people's perseverance and determination. Resilience is closely related to a generalized lack of ambition known to our social types. When every grain of salt and every particle of matter has significant importance in the theoretical equations that calculate all these and those happenings, it is sometimes difficult to pick one's self up with ambition to achieve things of worth when they are all lost around these here corners and those one's over there.
The progressive steps taken by an expanding and compressing assembly line's mechanized productions are either efficient or their not, but all in all it all depends on one's own perspective regarding does it mean anything or nothing at all.
Love and hate are terms coined by some who cared enough to define what is exquisitely rare, the idea, the thought, the experience. They are extremes, just as apathy is a conditional state temporarily personified by our momentary states of being.
Maybe we should all rely on flipping coins or stones and calling heads and tails in order to discover the truths whose answers are questionable theories themselves.....
The sounds of silence hum out so melodiously; or at least, so it seems in my entangled mind.

I would like to comment on your question.
Firstly, this 'equation' is not valid. Things like love, hate and so on cannot be expressed as a mathematical equational.
Now suppose that you wanted to express it as such. Then, ' -(-love)=apathy' is not valid as - - is +, which will end you with love.

My point being that Love/Hate are two sides of the same coin, not opposites. Indifference is more of an opposite since even to hate someone you have to care. Indifference or Apathy precludes a strong feeling of any kind.

Re: Love and Hate

I use the term "indifferent" as opposed to apathy.

Apathy is lack of feeling or emotion or lack of interest of concern. It may be a matter of semantics but the word LACK is not a neutral word. Indifferent is having no particular interest or concern and not mattering one way or the other; being impartial.

In puzzles, semantics are a factor. Thanks for that new word to play with.

Can you think of any other words that fit this equation? Are there any other words that can replace all three that are not the same as all three?

it is just like that
positive - neutral - negative
neutral means no feeling about or don't want to show because don't even consider, 50, 50 for both.
but one needs to show feelings and love and hate are two stages or extremes and apathy is in between them.
so one person at a time lovable and at the same time can be hated by. apathy when he/she has no emotions or don't want to show his/her feelings or never think like that.
sometimes we hate people because of our love, our expectations. booth feelings love and hate animates for those we like or know or have some kind of relationship. for strangers we have apathy that convert or leads to love when their attitude we like or want to attach with them and to hate when their attitude we think negative or don't meet our expectations but right expectations.
Thank you

If you do some simple algebra, you get love = apathy AND hate = apathy

Thar would be -(-L)=A and -(-H)=A Strip out the negatives and parenthesis.

If L=A and H-A, then Love=Hate, or Hate=Love. Or, "I wanna walk but I run back to you."

Did you write a Joan Jett song? See video.

I almost want to answer "sex=love vs. love=long-term relationship," because neither are necessarily true and sex does not necessarily equal a long-term relationship .

This classic song--illustrates that theory perfectly. Sing it Marvin.

There are your potential opposites: sex and long-term relationship.

Then again, I hardly understand your equation.. Or your question.

If you want a simple two-sides-of-the-same-coin, having sex/making love works.

There is a difference. Entirely different animals with striking similarities.

One night stand? Sex, no question. It's all feeling, no real emotion. Almost a sport.

Sinatra. You Make Me Feel So Young:

Best friends inevitably getting together? Making love, even if just once. Intensely emotional.

"You Make Me Feel So Young" works here, too.

But this "I've Got The World On a String" describes that indescribable feeling perfectly:

Well to put it in longer words, and I only used math terms to fit it in the space of the question, I observed that if the opposite of love is apathy and the opposite of hate is apathy are there any other words whose opposite appears to be each other (love is the opposite of hate some say) when in fact they are not yet they share the same opposite - in this case apathy (or indifference) is the opposite of love and hate but the opposite of apathy is not necessarily love OR hate.

Some might say the opposite of sweet is sour when in fact the opposite is in fact tastelessness?

There, I've answered by own question. Can you think of other examples?
