Is learning cursive writing really necessary?

I had horrible cursive growing up...so bad that I reverted to printing as soon as possible. With computers as prevalent as they are today, is this a skill worth learning anymore?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Cursive is actually being taught less and less in schools these days, and, aside from signing our names, as haleyjoanna mentioned, cursive is rarely if ever required outside of an academic setting and then only in grade school when it's being taught.

Back in "the day," when people wrote with quills and fountain pens, printing would create blotches of ink and make a mess of the paper, whereas writing in cursive was smoother so it was neater and more efficient. Not so these days will ballpoint pens and the extent to which we do our writing with computer keyboards.

While cursive shouldn't become a "lost art," and while, for some people, it can be easier on the hand when writing the "old-fashioned way," I would generally say that cursive isn't absolutely necessary anymore.

I have never once had to use it except to sign documents. Everything these days are typed on computers any way.

Let's say a lot of things are on computer! I wouldn't say everything! (But nearly that way) I still have to hand fill out paper work for my job, and sure there are still jobs around that people still use handwriting, but I suppose these are all of the older generation, so guess the school age kids now, will all be using computers, but still think it would be a shame for handwriting to disappear!

Okay. So these days, as haleyjoanna mentioned, yes, most things are typed on computers. Yet, it is important for school and even jobs sometimes. In school you do learn cursive, and you have assignments to do on it, and you get marked for how well you write it. There, it is important. Now, if you are grown up, it is not that big of a deal, depending on your job. If you had to fill out a form, and write a bit about yourself, or something like that, not using a computer, people think of you as a smarter, more educated person if you write in cursive. That means that you have learned in, and have mastered it. It actually shows a lot. But since you don't seem to have had problems with not knowing, or not being good at it, I guess it is not needed in your life. It isn't a necessary skill, but it is one worth knowing, I say. Hope I helped! :)

No, cursive writing is not a useful skill anymore. The advent of computers has made cursive writing an anachronistic art. Better to spend your time on improving your touch typing skills rather than learning a skill that is of limited usefulness in this day and age.

I agree, I had a terrible time learning cursive in the third grade and to this day my handwriting is a bad mix of print and scrawl - so I learned to type as soon as possible. I learned to type on a manual typewriter. Now that computers are so prevalent I don't see why people need to learn cursive, although I DO wish old school typing was still taught. It is very annoying to have to wait while people "hunt and peck" type onto their keyboards, when even a 35 wpm typist on a manual should be able to hit 50 wpm on a keyboard

I think cursive writing is very good for your hand writing .if I know in future there all are done by computer, but value of your hand writing is so much in your personal or professional life.
although Cursive is actually being taught less and less in schools these days, but I think this is very good for your hand writing. you can try it like this
