Except for the use of a round ball, they couldn't be more different. In lacrosse players are limited as to where on the field they can go; in soccer they can, and do, go everywhere on the field. Because of the high degree of control of the ball in lacrosse, there is no midfield play; that is, no one contests possession of the ball at midfield in lacrosse. In soccer, the struggle for midfield domination is critical to the outcome. The patterns of play in lacrosse are highly repetitive, whereas in soccer the variations are endless. Both sports do use a round ball, though.
