Jazz and blues share similar histories and qualities. People unfamiliar with either might not even be able to tell them apart. But despite the similarities, they aren’t synonymous. They’re both different genres of music, although people might use the terms interchangeably by mistake. Blues came first. The term literally refers to depression or the depressed mood of the music. Jazz, on the other hand, was a slang word that was applied to the music style after it was popular. Both genres developed in the South among black communities and both went on to inspire other genres of modern music. Blues and jazz are still popular today and there are still very active blues and jazz cultures in Chicago, New York, and many cities in the South.
