Is it worth getting a blu-ray player even if I don't have a hi-def tv?

Tip for best answer: M$1.31
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Buying a blu-ray player for the sake of buying a blu-ray player? No.

Buying a blu-ray player to replace a dead DVD player? Yes. The price difference between a blu-ray and a regular DVD player is not huge and you will be future proofing your self when you have to replace the TV.

Blu-ray is a technology that is getting skipped by a lot of people. DVD's look almost as good and are half the price. Digital downloads bypass the physical media all together and are cheaper.

You would not be able to tell the difference between DVD and blu-ray on a standard def TV. Even if/when you get a hi-def TV, DVDs look great with a upscaling DVD player and you wouldn't have to re-buy all of your movies. Unless you intend to buying movies only on blu-ray once you buy a hi-def TV, I wouldn't bother, at least for a while. DVDs still have a lot of life in them.

A huge positive for an owner of a new bluray player with a standard def television is the ability of some bluray players to be able to stream Netflix on demand movies. Though it may be cheaper to get an apple TV to do this, you would be future proofing your entertainment system for a few years.

Good point, I forgot about the internet stuff. There's also Pandora and Blockbuster.
