Is it truly a waste of time to watch a Soap Opera?

Can it be just a diversion? the development of "familiar territory"? A conversation point? A long-lasting substitute for the old-fashioned way of living in one place for a lifetime? If a person has been watching a soap opera for 10, 20, 30 years, does it qualify as a "valuable" part of their life? What is the percentage of regular male viewers?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I am a man and I watch "One Life to Live".
No I don't think I'm wasting my time, I got swept into the One Life to Live drama recently and I actually find the show quite entertaining.
I hate that chick Stacy, Cole shouldn't have to go to prison and Rex is an idiot for not knowing. Gigi is my favorite. That woman Jess, Tess, Bess, whatever she is crazy.
If you see this woman ... let her know Gigi is going to find out the truth.

At first I was uninterested but the show just grew on me.

No. Most significantly though, soap opera's concern with the everyday lives of everyday people and their problems, big and small, appears to be one of the main reasons why this genre is so popular. So go and switch on that T.V friend!!!

If it's of value to the person watching, I don't think it's necessarily a waste of time. However, that doesn't mean there aren't things they could be doing instead that they'd find more rewarding, or that would be more rewarding for the lives of others. Part of the reason they provide value is because they are a diversion, they lead to development of familiar territory, and they're a conversation point. I'm not sure that they're a substitute for the old-fashioned way of living in one place for a lifetime, but most things that people enjoy for extended multi-year periods of time become a valuable part of their life.
