Is it true there is a cure for Diabetes Type 1?

My son (who is diabetic type 1) and I were told there was a cure for diabetes type 1 that had been discovered a couple of years ago and it had to go through the drug administration process but I have not seen any information on this recently. I know something was said about individuals who would be diagnosed with type 1 diabetes would be cured before being sent home when this new drug came out but does anyone know what the drug is or have further details regarding how it would work?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Tell whoever told your son that The American Diabetes Assciation disagrees:

"Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. Only 5-10% of people with diabetes have this form of the disease. With the help of insulin therapy and other treatments, even young children with type 1 diabetes can learn to manage their condition and live long, healthy, happy lives"

Note the word "manage."

Mayo Clinic agrees:

"Treatment for type 1 diabetes is a lifelong commitment to:

* Taking insulin
* Exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight
* Eating healthy foods
* Monitoring blood sugar"

I even considered TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). One guy's page--the top result in a search, but the big study quoted says "The studies included a total of 1,391 men and women with either impaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting glucose -- problems in blood-sugar control that lead to sugar levels that are elevated, but not high enough to diagnose diabetes."

Note the last sentence--the studies were NOT done with persons with diabetes.

Another study quoted says this:
"A small, randomized clinical study showed that treatment with American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) helped improve glucose tolerance in nondiabetic people as well as those with type II diabetes mellitus.

For the study, 10 nondiabetic people and 9 people with type II diabetes received treatment with 3 g ginseng or placebo capsules either 40 minutes before or in combination with an oral glucose challenge.

In nondiabetic participants, no difference was observed in glycemia between placebo and ginseng when the substances were administered along with glucose, but significant reductions were seen when ginseng was taken 40 minutes before the glucose challenge. However, compared with placebo, both ginseng dosage regimens improved glucose tolerance in the people with diabetes.

The researchers cautioned that for nondiabetics, "to prevent unintended hypoglycemia, it may be important that the American ginseng be taken with meals." They also noted that the 3 g dose of ginseng used in their study is higher than that used in most other clinical studies, which is typically 1.5 g or less."

Nine persons with diabetes--and ten without--doesn't make a study. It's not even quantified other than to say "significant reductions were seen "

Amazingly, this study of less than two dozen people was published as a journal article: Vuksan V, Stevenpiper JL, Koo VYY, et al. American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) reduces postprandial glycemia in nondiabetic subjects and subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Archives of Internal Medicine 2000; 160: 1009-1013.

Whoever told your son must have the wrong information. I have done a little research and reading online and there is no cure yet for Type 1 Diabetes but there is a promising experiment which deals with gene therapy that might reverse Type 1 Diabetes. The experiment was done on mice and it shows that gene therapy was able to reverse Type 1 DM.

Researchers were able to develop an experimental cure for Type 1 Diabetes and this was presented at the Endocrine Society's 92nd Annual Meeting in San Diego.

The team from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston use gene therapy to counter the two defects that cause Type 1 Diabetes which are the autoimmune attack and destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells. Using non-obese diabetic mice, which developed diabetes due to autoimmunity like humans do with Type 1 DM.

One single treatment cured about 50% of the diabetic mice and restored their blood sugar to normal so that they no longer needed insulin injections. Type 1 DM occurs when the body's immune system attacks and destroys the beta cells in the pancreas that produces insulin for the body. This will result to the buildup of blood sugar and thus diabetes.

The research which was funded by the National Institute of Diabetes, Kidney and Digestive Diseases, said that they added to the gene therapy approach a protective gene called interleukin-10 that shields the newly formed beta cells from autoimmune attack. Interleukin-10 is an important regulator of the immune system.
