about COX Inhibitors
Is it true that NSAIDs are never good for an athletic injury?

There are different types of NSAIDs, but all of them are COX inhibitors, meaning that they block the action of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes. COX-1 protects the lining of the stomach and maintains kidney function, while COX-2 production is associated with injured or inflamed joints.
Traditional NSAIDs such as aspirin and ibuprofen act as both COX-1 and COX-2 inhibitors. As a result, they decrease swelling and inflammation but increase the risk of stomach problems. Newer NSAIDs like Celebrex and Vioxx block only the COX-2 enzyme and (at least in theory) provide the anti-inflammatory effect of older NSAIDs without the stomach irritation. However, COX-2 inhibitors are also associated with an increased risk of heart attack and/or stroke, and two of them (Vioxx and Bextra) are no longer available. They may also delay bone regrowth after injury, although this is still uncertain.
In general, though, short-term use of COX inhibitors is considered safe and effective in treating orthopedic injuries, including fractures.
