Is it time to take the all-star vote away from the fans?

As far back as I can remember, it seems like the fans voting for the starters of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game meant that you saw at least a few starters who had no business playing in the game. There have also been some teams that have gamed the system, to get their players in. The most recent was that the Florida Marlins were giving away free tickets to any fan who filled out 200 All-Star ballots. The catch was that you have to vote for every Marlin player on the ballot. Considering that baseball loves to claim that “this time it counts” that seems to be an odd way of going about getting the best players on the team.

The way Major League Baseball is running the All Star Game, I think the players should be selected by coaches and other players around the league. If the game is going to determine which league has the home field advantage in the World Series, only the best players should make up the roster. I don't agree that the game should determine home field advantage and if the game was as it used to be, a fun game for the fans, then let the fans pick the players. I must say that the fans usually do a credible job in picking All Star caliber players but sometimes players that are past their prime, former All Star players of future Hall of Fame players get voted in when clearly they are not having great statistical seasons. Either change the game back to how it was or change the player selection process.
