Is it time to abandon or modify the two-party system in America?

Recently, the Green Party Candidate for California was arrested for trespassing when trying to participate in a debate between the Democratic and Republican nominees. The Taxed Enough Already or Tea Party is gathering significant popularity nationwide as the popular backlash against the policies of the current administration gathers momentum. Is it time to abandon or modify the traditional two party system to give more representation to the people?

Yes, the two party system should be done away with in my opinion. It makes it extremely hard to work together towards common goals in this country if people simply refuse to agree with anything that the opposing party says or wants to do simply because of their party affiliation. It is virtually impossible for people to work as a team (as our government ideally should) if the 2 parties are "enemies." Also, the voices of people who are not associated with either of these parties are virtually ignored, as in the case that you mentioned of the Green Party candidate who was arrested for trespassing. What if political parties did not exist at all? Then people would be forced to focus on the issues instead.

It would be great if the traditional party system in the U.S. were modified. The problem is so much money is already invested in the two party system that so-called "third party" candidates have a very difficult time making any headway.

Many people in the country consider themselves independents and may cross party lines to vote. This is about as close as a third party movement has come. Joe Lieberman, the senator from Connecticut, is technically an independent even though he lines up on the Democrat side of the aisle. Lieberman is a good example of a politician with a handle on the issues from both the Republican and Democratic side. He ran as Al Gore's running mate in 2000, but since then has seemed too conservative for the many Democrats. There was even talk of Lieberman being John McCain's running mate in 2008, but Lieberman would not completely abandon the Democrats. Keep in mind though, Lieberman did speak at the 2008 Republican convention.

The best hope that the country has for a third force in politics is if someone of the ilk of Lieberman were to cast off party shoes and run as an independent. These movements have held steam before and someday, maybe a Presidential candidate will be elected from the independent ranks.
