Is it time to abandon or modify the two-party system in America?

M$Many people in the country consider themselves independents and may cross party lines to vote. This is about as close as a third party movement has come. Joe Lieberman, the senator from Connecticut, is technically an independent even though he lines up on the Democrat side of the aisle. Lieberman is a good example of a politician with a handle on the issues from both the Republican and Democratic side. He ran as Al Gore's running mate in 2000, but since then has seemed too conservative for the many Democrats. There was even talk of Lieberman being John McCain's running mate in 2008, but Lieberman would not completely abandon the Democrats. Keep in mind though, Lieberman did speak at the 2008 Republican convention.
The best hope that the country has for a third force in politics is if someone of the ilk of Lieberman were to cast off party shoes and run as an independent. These movements have held steam before and someday, maybe a Presidential candidate will be elected from the independent ranks.
