Is it still possible to buy Barley Sugar or Barley extract?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I also found some recipes to make barley sugar...

Googling "How to make Barley Sugar" seems to bring up a wealth of recipes to make it from items you can find easily at the store. I couldn't find any actual Barley sugar sellers either though, weird. Sounds like going into production and putting it on ebay could be profitable lol
Edit: I think i confused myself.. I believe those recipes are actually for barley sugar candy....which can be bought:

I found more but they are all UK based.

Suggests trying organic health stores and beer brewing supply shops. It also suggests you can substitute molasses and honey (50/50) in most recipes for Barley extract.
Hope that helps... not exactly a direct answer but.. all I could find.

M$Our local brew shop also sells it, but if you purchase it there you will want to know if you want a light, medium, or dark syrup since this would affect the taste of the candy. I would say if you aren't sure opt for medium. I didn't have luck finding premade barley sugar, but there are tons of recipes for making it.

Haha yea, that's actually what I'm tyring to make - the actual candy. The old time pops had Barley in them. The new ones do not. Why? Because less and less people are alive that know how to make THE REAL DEAL. Its sort of a lost art so to speak. There are people out there that do make them still - minus the Barley. I just was trying to make them like my families recipe because those are THE best lol. But as you can see I'm having a hard time finding the barley!
No doubt.. I wouldn't have expected it to be so hard to find because as the thread I linked states Barley is used in brewing as well as baking. Supposedly the Barley sugar is also better for diabetics.. you'd think with the growing number of diabetics it would be all over..
