Is it safe to visit the dentist for a cleaning if you're pregnant? What about dental x-rays? Fluoride treatments?

I also wondered what would be done IF someone who is pregnant developed a dental problem - not just a cavity. I'm thinking more along the lines of an abscess or something that might require a major procedure (and medication, which opens a whole different can of worms). Can this be fixed while one is pregnant? So many questions, I know, but if anyone can share some insight on their experiences I'd be most grateful.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

According to the American Pregnancy Association, the risks of developing an infection or other issue during pregnancy and leaving them untreated are worse than the risks of correcting the problem ASAP. Routine work is fine during all stages of pregnancy, however surgeries should be done during the second trimester or after birth. Things like whitening and unnecessary x-rays should wait until after birth. Not much is recommended during the first trimester or third trimester, postponing things whenever possible. Preventative care seems to be the best course of action there, treating things and maintaining good oral health so larger problems do not develop during a pregnancy.

I would go to get my teeth cleaned if it were scheduled, and I would tell the dentist I was pregnant. For myself I would refrain from Xrays or flouride treatment.
