Is it safe to take Tylenol every day, for headaches?

I am really concerned about a friend who gets migraine headaches every day. She is always popping Tylenol, like it is candy. I have known her two years or so now, and she has been taking Tylenol every day this whole time. She doesn't have health insurance, so she won't see a doctor about it.

When taken as directed according to the package label and dosing instructions Tylenol does not cause liver damage but it is not for long term use without the advice of a physician. The warning states that if you have pain or fever beyond 10/3 days you should seek medical advice.

I would very concerned about the continuous headache and would try to convince her to seek medical advice. Around here we have these small "Access Clinics" that base your fee on your income. There might be something similar in your area.

As long as she's following the recommended dosage, supposedly it is safe. However chronic and continued Tylenol use or use with alcohol may affect your liver rather negatively. According to studies some have shown it does no damage others say daily use even for 2 weeks can cause mild to moderate liver damage. Personally I lean on the later side as my mother used to use chronically for migraines and the doctors said it played a big part in her liver damage.

Seriously she should visit a neurologist a headache specialist, Tylenol hurts the lining of your stomach walls. Hope she feels better soon.

I'm not a big fan of tylenol (acetaminophen)..it doesn't really do anything (i find)..I prefer to use Advil (ibuprofen). I've heard several bad things about tylenol..I do remember taking tylenol when I was younger (all the time) and when I stopped, I had severe headaches.

In addition to what the other answers have said, the problem with taking drugs like this regularly for pain is that you need more and more of them to get the same effect as time goes on. Your body gets increasingly resistant to the drug. Do you know how many she's taking? You say she pops them "like candy", which doesn't surprise me. I know someone who is quite dependent on certain pain meds and they pop them by the handful as well.

To be completely honest with you, I'm surprised the body holds up to this stuff as well as it does. Is it safe to pop pills like crazy for an extended period of time? No, but you may be able to take several thousand of them or more before noticing the effects of the damage that you've caused. It's a slippery slope and a dangerous road. However, from what you've said, it sounds like your friend still has time to change her course and avoid any really serious problems.
