Is it safe to microwave food in a styrofoam container?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

If it doesn't say microwave safe, don't use it. There's some heavy-duty styrofoam containers that will say microwave safe on them... but most every-day-use styrofoam containers are not. I just checked my styrofoam cups and they say, "Not recommended for microwave, might melt or ignite." A quick check to Whirlpool's microwave FAQ says, "Do not use Styrofoam in your microwave.
Do not use straw, wicker or wooden containers in your microwave."

Bottom line, if you REALLY want to microwave something in styrofoam, check for the magic words "microwave safe." If it's not there, take the extra few minutes to put the food/liquid into something else before nuking it.

I would have to disagree. As you heat any plastic you degrade the chemical bond. Personally I use a glass plate with a lid or a pyrex glass container with a plastic lid, which I take off. Play it safe, use a plate.

According to Harvard Medical School, Yes.

Styrofoam is the brand name of a plastic product (yes, Styrofoam is a kind of plastic) whose generic name is polystyrene. The white foam used, for example, in hot beverage drinking cups (Styrofoam proper) isn’t the only kind of polystyrene used for food: Clear plastic “clamshell” containers are also made of polystyrene.

Contrary to popular belief, some Styrofoam and other polystyrene containers can safely be used in the microwave. Just follow the same rule you follow for other plastic containers: Check the label.
