Is it safe to cook with wooden spoons?

I always remember my mother having several wooden spoons in the kitchen at any given time. She used wooden spoons for everything. You could prop the window open with one or stir spaghetti sauce. She even had one spoon that she referred to as the "spanking spoon." However, I hardly see wooden spoons round anymore, and I am wondering if this may be a food safety thing. Is it ok to use wooden spoons for cooking? Or is this now a thing of the past?

Yes, it is absolutely safe to use wooden spoons. In fact, it's much better to use wooden spoons, since they are unlikely to change the flavor the foods. Metal spoons react to the acid in a dish, and can affect the taste. I prefer to use wooden spoons.

I think that people don't use wooden spoons as much because they like the new silicone ones. However, while these are convenient, I am not sure about the safety of using silicone or any other plastics in the kitchen. We learn about hazards of plastics more each day.

I was just curious about the amount of bacteria that could settle into the wood after each use.
