Is it safe for a baby or child to get a flu shot or vaccine?

How safe is it for young babies or kids to get a flu shot? What are the general rules or guidelines for giving a flu shot to young children?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

This is a do you care about the possible risks, type question. There is an unproven link between the flu vaccine and autism. Please note the following information is only relevant for Thimerosal a mercury based preservative containing vaccines. They do make a Thimerosal free flu vaccine now, but you need to request it.

Though the FDA and other government agencies feel evidence is not yet sufficient to say these mercury containing flu vaccines are causing autism and some other mental disorders and learning delays as a parent in my opinion there is sufficient evidence not to take that risk or at least to acknowledge it as a risk.

A really good write up about Thermerosal containing vaccines:

You should also consult your pediatrician before getting your child any vaccinations.

In most cases, doctors will not suggest getting a flu shot before the first birthday. This is one of those questions that you really need to ask your pediatrician due to the fact that he or she will know your child's medical history, your family medical history, and other factors that would go into making this kind of decision. The factors that one would need to know to correctly answer in mean to your child's circumstance would cause you to post information that you might not want the rest of this (or any other) website to know.

I would not recommend getting a flu shot for a new baby, however, I can tell you as a mother of 7 children, that you need to get those vaccinations for your child. This protects them from the different diseases that could affect them, and with new strands of common diseases coming out every year, I would want to ensure that my children are as protected as I can make them. These vaccinations are pretty safe and in very rare cases a child may have an allergic reaction but otherwise the child is pretty safe. While your child may have a few hours of fever and a headache (maybe) it will go away later.
