Is it rude to fart in a public restroom?

I'm being serious.

Beans really do me in, but I love Mexican food, so I just have to deal with flatulence. I know it is rude to fart in the dining area of the retaurant, so I make my way to the restroom and let it out in the stall. In my mind, I am being considerate of the other diners. Well, these gals in the restroom made some disparaging comments about my need to release the gas. I commented right back, through the stall door, and said, "Well, it has to come out sometime!" But really, what else was I supposed to do?

I suppose one could have taken various comedic directions in answering this question, yet as you do state that you pose it as a serious question I shall answer it accordingly. It would seem to me that a public restroom is the correct place to release flatulence when it can no longer be contained. If the entire restroom appears to be empty, no feet visible in any of the stalls, nobody washing their hands at the sink station, then I see no reason why one would even attempt to “muffle” any sounds associated with biological functions. If, however, other people are present in the restroom I would attempt to “muffle” as much as possible any sound related to my biological functions. I see it as a courteous gesture on my part. I know that I would not want to hear the full bass and treble of rip roaring flatulence in the stall next to me, so I would endeavor to “muffle” as much as I can. Yet, I am also aware that it is a restroom, designed to give us a place to dispose of our human waste, so I am not offended, nor would I ever make disparaging comments about anyone that did not “muffle” as I know by experience that try as best as one can, “muffling” is not always successful.

I am the same way. I love Mexican food and beans but I get super gassy. I do not think there is anything wrong with going to the bathroom to fart.

It is funny how we are brought up to be ladies and meanwhile our boyfriends or husbands have no problem sitting in the front room farting and farting. But if WE ever fart in public it is looked upon as unladylike. It is like that in my house. My husband has no problem farting in our house. It is almost second nature. I guess I just learned to try to hold it in always. Sometimes that can be hard and you almost get a horrible stomach ache from holding it in.

I think it is ok to go in the bathroom and fart.
