Is it right to criticize celebrities for doing humanitarian work?

Celebrities like Madonna and Angelina Jolie have been the butt of jokes for their humanitarian work. It is true they receive special treatment compared to other aid workers but does that mean they deserved to be made fun of by comedians?

I don't think that it is right to criticize people for doing humanitarian work. I think that people should be encouraged and praised for such efforts. However, I do think that there is a difference between actual criticism and being the butt of jokes. Additionally, I really don't think that you picked good examples. I honestly don't think that the majority of the criticism/jokes about Angelina Jolie and Madonna have really anything to do with their humanitarian work. It likely has more to do with their constant need to adopt children from depressed areas. This is not, IMHO, humanitarian work. It is something that does need greater examination and has its critics within the affected countries themselves, let alone late night talk show hosts.

I do not think people should be criticized for doing humanitarian work. Anybody who goes to Africa or Southeast Asia or any other part of the world where there is a huge disadvantaged population deserves credit. They do good work themselves, and even more important, they bring awareness to issues that aren't generally on the front page.

However, I also think it is ok for comedians to make jokes about them. Comics make jokes about everything and everybody. I don't think it necessarily means they are criticizing them. I give comedians a lot of latitude to joke about things that they can joke about.

Is it "right"? There are aspects of criticism that is "right" and aspects that are "wrong". The criticism points out some of the special treatment and "flexibility of rules" for celebrities... It demonstrates that the system is flawed.

Do they deserve to be made fun of... Yes... and no. They are public figures, so they're going to get some of it. No... because they're humans and have feelings as well.

It is the job of comedians to make fun of everything and anyone. Like the late, great George Carlin, making fun of the flawed truth is a great way of getting things done.
