Is it possible to see Mayan ruins and other cultural activities as day trips if you're staying in Cancun?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

When travelling to Chichen Itza make sure to stop through Valladolid to see a wonderful Colonial style Mexican town, much different than Cancun.

Another option is Tulum, http://www.entertainment-plus.net/tour_tulum_xelha.cfm?aff=ancu2, which is a 2 hour drive, but it's not as nice.
